'Mel Calman on Love, Rage and Neurosis’: Libby Purves in conversation with Stephanie and Claire Calman

We are delighted to invite you to a fascinating evening hosted by Olympia Auctions, in aid of West London Action for Children.

Well-known broadcaster, journalist and author Libby Purves OBE will talk to Stephanie Calman, a screenwriter and best selling author and her sister Claire Calman poet, writer and broadcaster about their father, the great irreplaceable cartoonist Mel Calman (1931 - 1994), discussing memories of their childhood and his work which will be on exhibition.

Best known for his pocket cartoons at The Times and The Sunday Times, Mel Calman was a greatly accomplished and highly successful cartoonist. He also worked for television, in films, publishing - including his own 20 books, and advertising. A staunch advocate of cartoons, he opened The Workshop in 1970 specialising in drawings, illustrations and cartoons which later became the Cartoon Gallery. He was also co-founder of the Cartoon Art Trust. Generous with his encouragement of other cartoonists, he helped a number find work and publishers.

Olympia Auctions are exhibiting Mel Calman's cartoons from 19th February - 1st March titled 'Mel Calman on Love, Rage and Neurosis'.

Doors open at 6.30pm. The In Conversation starts at 7pm finishing about 8pm. Drinks and nibbles will be served

In Conversation with Alex Manolatos

In Conversation with Alex Manolatos

In the Greco-Roman world, bathing was a communal activity and it seems apt that this pastime recently became the focus of attention of London-based artist Alex Manolatos, himself of Greek origin. Manolatos was a regular swimmer at the Chelsea Swimming Baths during his school days. Returning forty years later and now a regular again, he has been inspired to paint disparate people gathered in this unique environment, capturing or hinting at their fleeting interactions. The noisy outgoing world we jostle in for our place turns introspective with silent inferences, set in a swimming pool.

Finding truth in human behaviour is pursued in all Alex Manolatos' works. Alongside pictures of Pool Life, are paintings and drawings inspired by the artist’s own ‘Memories’, the second part of the exhibition title. Manolatos’ sensitive nature picked up on the erosion of familial relationships during his childhood, and the paintings are like instant kodak photographs of objects or scenes retrieved from memory and cast with looming shadows of unease. As he says ‘children are much cleverer than we think.’

There will be an In Conversation between Alex Manolatos and author and journalist Emma Crichton Miller on the Thursday 7th February, to raise funds and awareness for West London Action for Children. In it the artist will be discussing his childhood through his art.

You can register for the event by clicking here.
