Remembering Heather
A gentle afternoon on 17 January was spent in appreciation of Heather, as friends, family and colleagues gathered to reminisce and share happy memories of our much-loved late Chief Executive, Heather Boxer, who passed away on 12 January 2025.
The River Room was beautifully set, with tables decorated with fresh flowers and a thoughtfully curated selection of photographs celebrating Heather’s life and work. Guests were treated to scones with cream and jam, cakes and biscuits - an afternoon tea of which Heather would have thoroughly approved. Around 70 people attended, some travelling from as far as Norway, and enjoyed the stunning views across the river towards Hammersmith Bridge.
It hardly seems possible that a year has passed since we lost Heather. Therapists from WLAC, alongside volunteers, trustees and friends, came together to celebrate her rich and remarkable life. We were especially honoured to welcome Heather’s sister, Veronica Schroter, attended with Heather’s three children, Bryony, Kate and Christopher, as well as two grandchildren. They spent time talking with guests and sharing treasured memories, adding something truly special to the afternoon.
Veronica, who originallly introduced Heather to the organisation in the 1980s, delivered a heartfelt speech reflecting on Heather’s life, while our Director of Fundraising & Finance, Gazala Alvi, gave a thoughtful, moving and beautifully expressed tribute to Heather’s extraordinary contribution to the charity.
Heather joined WLAC in 1980, and through her dedication and warmth, fundraising events became the beating heart of our community — bringing people together and creating lasting impact. She was appointed our first Chief Executive in 2006, a role she shaped with vision, compassion and tireless commitment. For 45 years, Heather was at the very heart of WLAC, touching the lives of countless clients, staff members and volunteers. Her legacy of care, kindness and purpose will continue to inspire us for many years to come. She is deeply missed.
A blessing from Heather’s funeral:
Something Beautiful Remains
-Anon
The tide recedes, but leaves behind bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops, and yet it echoes on in sweet refrains.
For every joy that passes, something beautiful remains.
We miss you, Heather.
