“Rethinking play” - WLAC Away Day

St Paul’s Centre in Hammersmith hosted WLAC’s annual Away Morning for staff, trustees and key volunteers.  Around 30 people attended, and the morning offered an opportunity for everyone to meet, share ideas and hear a little more about the work of WLAC.

Our guest speaker for the morning was Dr Farrah Jarral. After reading Physiological Sciences at Oxford University, Farrah went on to study clinical medicine, training as a GP in Tower Hamlets, and followed this studying Medical Anthropology at Harvard as a Fulbright scholar. She has written and presented several TV and radio programmes for Channel 4 and the BBC, on a range of subjects including resilience, play, Coastal communities in Britain, and stigma and diversity in the Muslim world.

The theme of the morning was ‘Play’, and Farrah gave a fascinating and passionate talk, ‘Rethinking play’, exploring the huge importance and benefits of play for both children and adults.

We then heard from two of our therapists, Yvonne and Roz, who co-facilitate CAMEO (Come and Meet Each Other) our therapeutically-based Stay and Play group for parents and their under-5s. They talked about the importance of the use of play at the group sessions in childrens’ development.

A warm hearted thank you to everyone who presented, and to those who attended.
