Dads Matter

Dads Matter is one of WLAC’s regular group therapy programmes. It is a solution-focused parenting group for fathers and stepfathers who may be sole carers, non-resident, sharing care, or seeking to re-establish their relationship with their child(ren).

Dads can refer themselves to this group or be referred by partner agencies.

Groups can be extremely powerful because it helps people to realise that they are not alone in their experiences. Being in a group means that clients are exposed to different points of view and have the opportunity to learn from each other and support each other. Each person brings their own history, character and point of view. Group therapy can promote social skills, prompt self-reflection and cultivate hope, support and motivation.

However, group therapy is rarely plain sailing. It can often feel daunting and challenging, particularly at the outset. To prepare for success, WLAC’s experienced therapists and facilitators work closely with individual clients to help identify those who are most likely to benefit. The therapists prepare carefully for each session and after each session reflect in detail on what is working and what they can do to foster effective and constructive dynamics.

The Dads Matter course is a coherent six-week programme but WLAC is always client led; the therapists can and will adapt the sessions to respond to individual needs and the particular group dynamics.

The latest WLAC Dads Matter course is ‘in person’ having been offered online due to the pandemic. WLAC have noticed that some clients seem to have become very isolated and feel disempowered in the community they live in. Some say that they are finding it harder to be around people again. There are always new issues and challenges. But WLAC’s team of experts is ready to meet them and work patiently with all its clients to help them move forward more positively and with greater confidence.

Thank you for helping us to provide our Dads Matter service.
