Our Place

Our Place is our counselling service based at Melcombe Primary School in Hammersmith. Our Place is collaboration with the school with another external therapist. It runs throughout the school year and aims to contribute to the mental health and emotional well being of children and raise awareness of this within the school community. There has been a noticeable difference in the behaviour of the children who have received counselling during the year.

Our Place works with children who find it difficult to relate to their peers, who are emotionally withdrawn or who act aggressively. Often, these children have faced significant challenges in their lives such as bereavement, parental illness or domestic violence. Our Place has helped a number of children to improve their self esteem, develop their abilities to cope.

Through the therapeutic application of media such as art, puppets, clay and creative imagination, the counsellor engages her counselling and play-therapy skills. This enables children to communicate at their own level to explore feelings, worries and difficult events.

Our Place recognises that parents/carers and teachers are vital supporters in this work. Counselling sessions for both parent and child together can be offered to strengthen bonds or help with unresolved conflicts, as well as meetings with teachers to think about a child’s emotional needs within the school.
